May 1, 2025 – Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled its most powerful artificial intelligence model to date: Nova Premier, the latest addition to its Nova family of AI models. Announced on Wednesday, Nova Premier is designed for multi-modal input, capable of processing text, images, and video — although audio input is not yet supported.
Now available via Amazon Bedrock, AWS’s flagship AI development platform, Nova Premier is built for advanced use cases that involve context-aware tasks, multi-step planning, and tool integration across diverse data streams. It supports a context length of 1 million tokens, allowing it to process over 750,000 words in a single task.
Competitive But With Trade-Offs
While Nova Premier shows strengths in knowledge retrieval and visual analysis, outperforming in internal benchmarks like SimpleQA and MMMU, it underperforms compared to Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro in coding tasks and scientific reasoning, including SWE-Bench Verified, GPQA Diamond, and AIME 2025.
Also worth noting: Nova Premier is not a reasoning-first model like OpenAI’s o4-mini or DeepSeek’s R1. That means it doesn’t prioritize fact-checking or reflective reasoning, making it less suitable for tasks that demand deep verification.
Pricing and Positioning
In terms of cost, Nova Premier is competitively priced:
- $2.50 per 1M input tokens
- $12.50 per 1M output tokens
That puts it in line with Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro and slightly cheaper on generation costs.
Amazon is positioning Premier not only as a powerful model in itself but also as a “teaching model”—ideal for knowledge distillation, where its capabilities can be compressed into smaller, faster models tailored for specific enterprise tasks.
AI at the Heart of Amazon’s Growth
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has emphasized AI’s growing role in the company’s strategy, revealing that Amazon is currently building over 1,000 generative AI apps. The company’s AI revenue is reportedly growing at triple-digit rates annually and already contributes to a multi-billion-dollar revenue run rate.
