TikTok is expanding how users connect through TikTok DMs, introducing voice notes and the ability to share up to nine photos or videos in one message. The update, confirmed to TechCrunch, applies to both one-on-one and group chats. As a result, TikTok is evolving beyond short-form video into a more interactive social experience.
With voice notes, users can record and send audio clips of up to 60 seconds. This feature is already popular on apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Apple Messages. Now, TikTok DMs offer the same convenience. It’s a natural fit, especially for Gen Z, who increasingly prefer voice over text for personal communication.
The voice note rollout will happen gradually over the next few weeks. Once available, users can tap and hold a microphone icon to record. Releasing the button sends the message instantly.
In addition to voice, users can now share multiple images or videos in a single DM. They can take new content with their camera or select from their device’s photo library. Editing tools let them crop, add stickers, or write on media before sending.
However, TikTok has added safety rules. Users cannot send a photo or video in their first message to someone new. For example, an initial DM can only include text or a TikTok video link — not personal media. This prevents unwanted or inappropriate content from being shared out of context.
TikTok also reminds users to protect their privacy when sending media. A pop-up prompt encourages them to think about who will see the content. This small nudge promotes safer sharing habits.
For younger users, protections remain strong. TikTok DMs are disabled for accounts under 16. Teens aged 16 to 18 can message others, but automated systems scan for nudity. If detected, the image is blocked before it’s sent. The recipient never sees it.
Users over 18 can choose to enable this nudity detection feature in their settings. TikTok says this gives adults control while maintaining a safer environment by default.
These updates follow TikTok’s broader push to improve messaging. Last year, the platform launched group chats for up to 32 people. Recently, it introduced Creator Chat Rooms, a space where creators and fans can interact in real time.
By enhancing TikTok DMs, the company wants users to stay engaged beyond watching videos. It aims to make the app a place for genuine connection — not just entertainment.
Moreover, the new features align TikTok more closely with other top social apps. Multi-media sharing and voice notes are standard elsewhere. Adding them helps TikTok remain competitive in a crowded digital space.
User feedback has long called for richer messaging tools. Many fans want to share moments with friends or creators in a more personal way. Now, with voice and photo sharing, they can.
TikTok sees these tools as ways for users to express themselves naturally. Whether it’s a quick voice update or a collage of memories, the goal is to make communication feel effortless.
As TikTok continues to grow, its messaging experience is becoming a core part of the platform. With each update, TikTok DMs move closer to being a full-featured communication hub — safe, expressive, and built for the way people connect today.
