Instagram has begun testing a Picture-in-Picture feature for Reels, allowing users to multitask while keeping videos playing in a small floating window. The company confirmed the test to TechCrunch on Tuesday.
The feature, first discovered by app researcher Radu Oncescu, lets participants keep a reel running while browsing other apps. A pop-up notification introduces the option and guides users on how to activate it.
Multitasking and Retention
Picture-in-Picture gives users more freedom to watch longer Reels without pausing their activity. For instance, a reel can keep playing while someone replies to a message or scrolls through X. This capability could improve retention for creators, since audiences no longer need to choose between finishing a reel and switching apps.
Competing With Rivals
TikTok and YouTube already offer Picture-in-Picture support. Adding the feature on Instagram ensures the app stays competitive and strengthens its appeal for creators aiming to grow audiences. For Meta, the benefit is clear: more time spent on the platform.
Internal Push for the Feature
The rollout aligns with earlier remarks by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who hinted months ago that PiP could arrive. At the time, Mosseri said he would “talk to the team and see if we can figure something out” after being asked when Instagram would match TikTok and YouTube.
Early Testing Phase
Currently, Instagram is limiting the test to a small group of users. As with other trial features, the company has not shared when—or if—it will launch Picture-in-Picture Reels globally.
The test marks another step in Instagram’s strategy to adapt features that improve engagement and keep pace with rivals in the fast-moving social video market.
