Apple may increase the iPhone 17 screen size to 6.3 inches, up from 6.1 inches on the iPhone 16. This would match the size of the Pro model and mark a notable shift for the base version. However, that may be the only major upgrade.
A new report by analyst Jeff Pu of GF Securities claims that the iPhone 17 will still use the A18 chip. It will also retain 8GB of RAM—the same configuration found in the iPhone 16. Earlier rumors suggested a possible memory boost, but Apple reportedly dropped that plan.
If accurate, this means the iPhone 17 may feel like a larger iPhone 16, not a true next-gen model. Meanwhile, the Air, Pro, and Pro Max versions will receive the new A19 chip and 12GB of RAM. That makes the base model the least advanced in the lineup.
Apple might be doing this on purpose. By limiting upgrades to the standard version, the company can steer customers toward more expensive models. These devices offer better specs, which boost both performance and profits.
Although a larger display is a welcome change, many fans may see the lack of internal upgrades as a letdown. The A18 chip is capable, but it doesn’t bring a new experience for those hoping for something faster or more powerful.
Apple has used this strategy before. It often saves its best features—like better cameras or ProMotion displays—for premium models. That approach helps differentiate its product tiers and encourages upselling.
Still, the rumored iPhone 17 screen size might appeal to users who want a larger display without paying Pro prices. For casual users, screen space could matter more than raw power. However, those who need performance will likely look to the higher-end options.
As always, these details remain speculative until Apple’s official announcement. If Jeff Pu’s report proves accurate, though, the iPhone 17 may bring modest changes at best. For now, the screen size appears to be the headline upgrade.
