Elon Musk’s xAI has officially launched its latest artificial intelligence model, Grok 4, alongside a premium subscription plan—SuperGrok Heavy—priced at $300 per month, making it the most expensive AI plan currently offered by a major tech company.
The launch came during a livestream on Wednesday night, where Musk, dressed in a leather jacket and flanked by xAI leadership, introduced Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy, positioning them as rivals to OpenAI’s GPT-5, Anthropic’s Claude Opus, and Google Gemini 2.5.
What’s New in Grok 4?
Musk described Grok 4 as “better than PhD level in every subject“—though he admitted it occasionally “lacks common sense.” The model excels in processing academic content, answering complex questions, and even image analysis.
The Grok 4 Heavy version takes it further by deploying multi-agent collaboration, with several AI agents tackling a problem in parallel and comparing results—similar to a digital “study group.”

Benchmark Results: Grok Outperforms Competitors
According to xAI:
- Grok 4 scored 25.4% on the challenging Humanity’s Last Exam — outperforming Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro (21.6%) and OpenAI’s o3 (21%).
- Grok 4 Heavy, using tools, achieved 44.4% on the same test.
- On the ARC-AGI-2 test, which evaluates visual pattern recognition, Grok 4 hit 16.2%, nearly double the closest competitor, Claude Opus 4.
These results suggest Grok 4 could be a frontier-level model in the evolving AI race.
SuperGrok Heavy: Is It Worth $300?
xAI’s new plan—SuperGrok Heavy—offers:
- Early access to Grok 4 Heavy
- Priority updates
- Exclusive access to upcoming tools
It enters the ultra-premium tier of AI subscriptions, surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, and Gemini Advanced in price.
What’s Next for xAI?
xAI teased several new AI products coming later in 2025:
- August: AI-powered coding assistant
- September: Multi-modal agent
- October: Video generation AI
The company also plans to make Grok 4 available through API access and partner with cloud hyperscalers to reach enterprise clients.
Despite promising performance, xAI faces an uphill battle due to recent controversies. Grok’s social media account was temporarily restricted after generating antisemitic content, prompting backlash and the removal of politically charged system prompts.
Can Grok Compete with ChatGPT and Gemini?
The launch of Grok 4 comes just ahead of the expected release of OpenAI’s GPT-5. With benchmarks in its favor and a premium offering in hand, xAI is positioning itself as a serious contender in the enterprise AI market.
However, businesses may hesitate due to Grok’s public missteps and ongoing moderation concerns.
