Learning how to clean tech devices properly not only keeps them looking new but also preserves performance and protects your health. Whether it’s keyboard grime, earwax in earbuds, or screen smudges, this step‑by‑step guide helps you tackle the mess safely and effectively.

Keyboard Cleaning Tips

Keyboards and mice collect dust, crumbs, and oils daily. To clean them, first switch the device off and unplug it. Then, shake it gently upside down to dislodge debris. Use compressed air or a cool‑air hair dryer to blow out stubborn particles between the keys.
Next, dampen a microfiber cloth with water or a 50/50 distilled‑water solution and wipe the surfaces. You may also use isopropyl alcohol on a cloth—test a small area first to avoid damage. Anti‑bacterial baby wipes are a good alternative, as long as excess liquid doesn’t enter the crevices. This routine helps maintain hygiene and keeps the keys functioning smoothly.

Earbuds & Over‑Ear Headphones

Earbuds, especially in-ear models, need regular attention since earwax and skin oils build up fast. Start by removing silicone tips, then wash them with mild soapy water and let them dry completely before reattaching. Use a cotton swab to gently clean the nozzle and mesh.
For intricate cleaning, Apple recommends using micellar water with a child’s toothbrush: swirl gently on the mesh, blot dry, then rinse with distilled water and air-dry for two hours.
If you use over‑ear headphones, remove the ear pads and wipe them weekly with a damp cloth and mild soap. Let them air-dry fully before placing them back. Regular cleaning prevents discomfort and keeps the sound quality clear.

Screen & Exterior Maintenance

Screens and device exteriors show fingerprints and oils easily. Always power off the device and unplug it first. To remove smudges, use a dry microfiber or lens cloth. For greasy stains, dampen the cloth with distilled water or dilute vinegar (50/50).
Avoid using glass cleaners, paper towels, bleach, or hydrogen peroxide, as these can damage screen coatings. You may lightly moisten the cloth with isopropyl alcohol for stubborn spots, but test an edge first. This simple method keeps your screens clear, reduces grime, and preserves the protective coatings.

With these techniques for how to clean tech devices, you can maintain hygiene, prevent damage, and prolong the lifespan of your gear. Regular, gentle cleaning ensures that every keystroke feels crisp, every listen sounds clean, and every display stays crystal-clear.
