The Anker Soundcore Sleep A30 promises what the older A20 could not: real snore masking. With smaller earbuds designed for side sleepers and the addition of active noise cancellation, these $230 buds target restless nights. After a month of nightly testing, the results are mixed.
The buds are smaller and more comfortable than AirPods Pro or even the A20. Side sleepers benefit most, since the A30s reduce soreness and muffle less when pressed against a pillow. For comfort, they are a clear step forward.
Snore masking works well, but only up to a point. Using Alexa to simulate snoring, the A30s blocked light snores completely and handled moderate noise with about 70 percent success. At extreme levels, the droning still cut through. The ANC system, paired with adaptive masking audio from the charging case, is clever, but it cannot perform miracles.
Battery life is the biggest drawback. Anker advertises nine hours with ANC enabled when playing local masking sounds. However, streaming over Bluetooth drops that to around 6.5 hours. More than once, the buds died before dawn during long podcast sessions. That problem didn’t occur with the cheaper passive A20 model.
Touch controls feel unreliable. Single and double taps often fail to register, leaving users unsure if the buds are dead or just unresponsive. This is frustrating when trying to fall back asleep. The sleep tracking feature also feels gimmicky, often giving optimistic scores that do not match real rest quality.
On the positive side, the A30s offer a wide range of white noise and soundscapes, from rain and wind to bubbling brooks. The Soundcore app adds reminders, alarms, and customization, though these extras may feel redundant. The buds also include a Find Device feature, loud enough to recover them from bedsheets.
At $229.90, the Anker Soundcore Sleep A30 costs $50 more than the still-available A20. The price jump is only worth it if the ANC helps you sleep through a partner’s snoring. If you are mainly a side sleeper who just needs white noise or podcasts, the cheaper A20 remains the smarter choice.
