20th anniversary iPhone to get brighter, thinner display

Apple is planning a major upgrade for the 2027 iPhone, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its launch. Reports suggest the device will feature a thinner, brighter, and longer-lasting display that not only improves visuals but also enhances battery efficiency.

The new display technology builds on OLED advancements Apple and partners have worked on for several years. By removing the traditional polarizing layer of OLED panels, Apple can prevent light blur without dimming the screen.

Color Filter on Encapsulation (COE)

The breakthrough comes from Color Filter on Encapsulation (COE) technology. This filter reduces reflection and eliminates the need for a polarizing layer. Current OLED panels use the polarizer, which dims the screen and requires more power to maintain brightness. By removing it, COE ensures displays that are thinner, brighter, and more energy efficient.

Apple’s 2027 Strategy

Apple reportedly intends to apply COE to its non-folding iPhones, starting with the anniversary model. An industry source noted that the company sees 2027 as a landmark year to showcase the new technology.

However, Apple may not be first to market. Samsung, which already used COE in the Galaxy Z Fold 3 back in 2021, is expected to bring it to the Galaxy S26 Ultra in early 2026. This could position Samsung ahead in the race to adopt thinner, brighter OLED displays in mainstream smartphones.

The shift to COE aligns with Apple’s broader focus on efficiency and design refinement. With less power required to achieve higher brightness, the iPhone’s battery life could see noticeable improvements alongside a slimmer build.
