Allstate’s controlled testing showed that the iPhone 17 Pro bent at 200 pounds of force, while the iPhone Air bent at 190 pounds. Despite the strain, both phones continued functioning. Another test by a YouTuber recorded the iPhone Air cracking at 216 pounds. These results place the two devices above average industry durability standards, suggesting they can handle normal everyday pressure without major risk.

Drop Test Results
The drop evaluations highlighted a weaker point in durability. Dropped from six feet onto a sidewalk surface, both phones remained functional but their Ceramic Shield 2 front glass shattered. Shattered glass made the devices unsafe to handle without repairs. On the rear, the iPhone 17 Pro only suffered scuffs on the frame and camera housing, while the iPhone Air developed a noticeable crack after its first drop. These outcomes show progress compared to earlier iPhones, but also confirm that fragility remains a concern.
Allstate’s Findings and Apple’s Efforts
Allstate noted that the improved Ceramic Shield on the rear likely helped boost survival rates. However, it still recommended that buyers use a case, a screen protector, and consider insurance to reduce repair expenses. The firm has tested earlier iPhones as well and regularly emphasizes the importance of protection. Apple also invests in extensive internal durability testing, simulating worst-case scenarios including liquid exposure, harsh drops, salt corrosion, and extreme light. Even with these measures, the results show that owners should treat the new models with care.
