Siri iOS 26.4 Update Raises Engineer Concerns

The Siri iOS 26.4 update was meant to mark a turning point for Apple’s long-troubled digital assistant, but internal reports suggest that optimism may be premature. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, several Apple engineers testing the upcoming version of iOS have expressed unease about Siri’s performance, raising doubts about whether the overhaul will truly meet expectations.

Early Concerns from Testers

Testers reportedly feel that the Siri iOS 26.4 update has not yet achieved the level of refinement anticipated. The update, expected in the spring of 2026, was supposed to finally implement Apple Intelligence improvements first introduced with iOS 18. However, sources indicate that internal “concerns” about Siri’s responsiveness and reliability persist.

Apple initially promised that Siri’s transformation would bring conversational fluidity, contextual awareness, and smoother integration across devices. Yet, the current feedback hints that some of those ambitions remain unrealized. Engineers are particularly worried about the system’s lag and inconsistent accuracy, which could undermine user confidence.

Delays and AI Leadership Challenges

The internal unease reflects broader issues inside Apple’s artificial intelligence teams. The Siri iOS 26.4 update coincides with a restructuring phase that followed years of setbacks in the company’s AI development. Apple has been searching for a replacement for John Giannandrea, the senior vice president overseeing AI strategy, whose tenure saw mixed results.

Adding to the challenge, key AI executives such as Robby Walker have reportedly left the company, contributing to project delays. Many of Apple’s top machine learning experts have been lured to rivals like Meta, attracted by higher compensation and greater creative freedom. This talent drain has slowed the momentum behind Siri’s long-awaited reinvention.

Legal and Strategic Pressure

Beyond engineering concerns, Apple faces external pressure over its AI promises. Legal filings accuse the company of misleading investors regarding Siri’s progress before acknowledging delays. These issues have amplified scrutiny on whether Apple can deliver a truly improved assistant with the Siri iOS 26.4 update.

Despite these complications, Apple remains determined to push forward. References to Model Context Protocol within earlier iOS 26 builds suggest that the company is exploring more efficient ways for Siri to access contextual data. This could eventually streamline performance and reduce errors in task execution.

The Future of Siri and Apple Intelligence

Apple’s commitment to AI remains clear. The company continues developing a ChatGPT-like iPhone app that could redefine how Siri interacts with users. Insiders believe this project may eventually merge with Siri, offering a more dynamic and conversational experience.

If successful, the Siri iOS 26.4 update could mark the beginning of a new era where Apple’s digital assistant evolves beyond voice commands into true contextual understanding. However, the road ahead appears complex, as early feedback underscores that the transformation is still incomplete.

Ultimately, Apple’s engineers remain cautiously optimistic. They understand the company’s reputation depends on delivering an assistant that feels truly intelligent and reliable. Whether the Siri iOS 26.4 update achieves that goal will depend on how Apple manages its internal challenges and balances ambition with execution in the months leading up to its release.
