Xiaomi 17 Ultra: The Galaxy S26 Ultra Rival That Puts Fun Back in Phones

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra by Leica reminds us that smartphones should be about more than just specs—innovative design and playful features set it apart.

This Galaxy S26 Ultra rival reminds us phones are supposed to be fun

As 2026 unfolds, Xiaomi has kicked off the year with an exciting new addition to the smartphone market—the Xiaomi 17 Ultra by Leica. This flagship model is a direct competitor to the upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra, and it immediately stands out by reminding us that smartphones are supposed to be fun and innovative, not just predictable and safe.

Quirky Design Done Right

What truly sets the Xiaomi 17 Ultra apart is its Leica Camera Ring. Positioned on the side of the camera island, this customizable ring allows users to map various camera features for easy access, from zooming to switching camera modes. While it may take some time to get used to, it represents an interesting approach that elevates the device’s usability without simply adding another redundant button.

The camera prowess itself isn’t surprising, as we’ve come to expect high-end specs from Xiaomi’s flagship phones, but the Leica-designed camera system takes things further with two new shooting modes: Leica Essential and Monopan 50. These aren’t just filters—they’re dedicated image-processing workflows that aim to emulate the iconic look of Leica’s M9 and M3 cameras, giving users a unique photo experience.

A Tactile Touch with Retro Appeal

Beyond the camera, Xiaomi has incorporated some thoughtful design elements that set the 17 Ultra apart. The knurled side frame on the right improves grip, making the phone less slippery than other flagship devices. Additionally, the retro-inspired volume buttons, reminiscent of the iconic iPhone 4, give the Xiaomi 17 Ultra a nostalgic feel. These round, etched buttons not only enhance usability but also add a refreshing touch of personality to the device.

Not Just About the Camera

While the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is undeniably a camera-centric phone, the software and image-processing features introduced by Leica are what truly elevate this device. The Leica Essential and Monopan 50 modes provide an immersive experience for those looking for more control over their shots. It’s this level of thoughtful integration between hardware and software that gives Xiaomi an edge over more predictable flagships.

As Samsung continues to roll out its Galaxy S26 Ultra, which seems to follow a familiar, safe design and feature set, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra reminds us that there’s room for innovation and personality in the smartphone market. It might not be the best overall device, but it has certainly made a stronger case for standing out in the crowded flagship space.
