Anthropic has introduced web search capabilities to its AI chatbot, Claude, marking a significant upgrade aimed at keeping pace with ChatGPT and other leading AI assistants. This enhancement enables Claude to automatically access the web for updated information when needed, removing the need for users to manually trigger a search.
Early indicators suggest the feature is powered by Brave Search, the privacy-focused engine built by browser developer Brave. Though Anthropic hasn’t officially confirmed the integration, evidence strongly points to the partnership. Notably, Brave Search was recently added to Claude’s data subprocessor list, and references to “BraveSearchParams” have appeared in Claude’s backend configuration.
What sets Claude’s web search apart is how intelligently it operates. Rather than simply retrieving results on command, Claude evaluates whether a web search would improve its answer. If it determines more recent data is beneficial, it can supplement its initial response—based on its training data, which currently runs up to October 2024—with fresh insights from the internet.
Scott White, who leads the web development of Claude, explains the system’s approach:
“Sometimes after it searches the web it’ll read the responses and the answers and say, ‘Hmm, did I answer the question or not?’ Then it’ll go out and do a couple more searches to make sure. So it feels like it’s checking its work.”
This layered reasoning gives Claude a more thoughtful and autonomous search function compared to tools like ChatGPT, which often rely on user prompts to initiate searches.
Beyond usability, the upgrade could have commercial ripple effects. According to Jim Yu, CEO of BrightEdge, Claude drove an 82% month-over-month increase in website referrals during February—surpassing rivals like ChatGPT and Perplexity in directing traffic to content creators and businesses.
Currently, the web search feature is live as a feature preview for U.S. users of the Claude 3.7 Sonnet model, with plans to roll it out to more countries and to Claude’s free tier in the near future.
While Claude does not yet include a “deep research” tool like those offered by Google’s Gemini or OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro, future iterations are expected to introduce more powerful research functionality.
With this upgrade, Claude becomes significantly more competitive, combining real-time web awareness with Anthropic’s focus on safe and reliable AI—an important step as the AI race intensifies.
