Bluesky blue check verification has officially launched as the platform works to boost trust and reduce impersonation. On Monday, Bluesky announced it would add blue checks to accounts verified as authentic and notable.
In a blog post, the company said it would proactively verify these users and display the checkmark next to their names. “Trust is everything,” the team wrote.
This change revives a feature once used on Twitter to help users identify real accounts. Elon Musk removed the original system after he bought Twitter in 2022. He then rebranded the platform as X and replaced identity-based verification with a paid subscription model called X Premium.
Meanwhile, Bluesky continues to position itself as a decentralized alternative to traditional social media. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey launched the project in 2019 to give users more control over their data and moderation tools.
Although Bluesky started in 2019, it gained traction in 2023. The rise followed Musk’s takeover of Twitter, which led many users to seek alternatives. Since then, Bluesky has grown rapidly. The platform now boasts over 30 million users.
In addition to this new verification system, Bluesky already allows users to confirm their identity through domain-linked handles. Over 270,000 accounts use this feature. Those users will now receive blue checks as “trusted verifiers.” The platform also plans to launch a public request form for other users soon.
Furthermore, Bluesky COO Rose Wang recently shared her excitement about the platform’s direction. She called 2024 the company’s “coming-out year.” She also noted a growing desire for safer, well-moderated spaces online.
According to Wang, people want platforms where they can follow news, connect with others, and enjoy positive conversations. Right now, many users feel that other networks fall short in these areas.
As more people search for reliable and respectful social spaces, Bluesky’s blue check verification could help build its reputation. The move may also attract users who seek authenticity and security online.
