Google is rolling out new anti-theft features to select Android phones, adding several functionalities aimed at improving data security in case your phone gets stolen. These include Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and an improved Remote Lock feature.
While Remote Lock has been around for some time, allowing users to remotely lock their phones using their phone number, the new Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock were first introduced in May and bring advanced security measures to the table.
Theft Detection Lock uses AI and sensors to recognize movements typically associated with theft, such as when someone snatches your phone and starts running. The feature can also detect movement from vehicles like bikes or cars, and once triggered, it automatically locks the phone, blocking access to all apps and data.
Offline Device Lock kicks in if a thief tries to disconnect your phone from networks for extended periods, locking the device to prevent unauthorized access.
It’s not clear yet which Android phones are receiving these updates, but users are encouraged to check for the latest version of Google Play Services to see if the new features are available on their devices.
