Starting next year, Samsung smartphones will have the ability to unlock smart locks either with a simple tap or even hands-free using Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. The tap-to-unlock feature will use NFC, similar to existing contactless payment methods.
This update brings Samsung users on par with iPhone owners, who already have fiddle-free smart lock unlocking options. Samsung will support the new Aliro smart lock standard, integrating it into the Samsung Wallet’s Digital Home Key.
Both unlocking methods will work locally between your phone and the lock, without the need for an internet connection, and you won’t even need to unlock your phone to open your door. However, hands-free unlocking via UWB will only be available on select Samsung models that support the technology, including the book-style foldables and the Plus and Ultra models of the Galaxy S series.
The Aliro standard is being developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the same group behind Matter, with involvement from Apple, Google, Samsung, and leading lock and chip makers. The first specification of the Aliro standard is expected to be released next year, alongside Samsung’s support for the technology and the arrival of Aliro-compatible smart locks.
